Trauma-Informed Yoga

A safe, gentle approach to yoga that honors your experience and supports healing

What is Trauma-Informed Yoga?

Trauma-informed yoga is a specialized approach that recognizes how trauma impacts the body and nervous system, and adapts traditional yoga practices to create safety, choice, and empowerment for survivors.

This practice is grounded in an understanding of trauma and uses specific teaching methods that help participants reconnect with their bodies in ways that feel safe and supportive. It's not just about what we practice, but how we practice and the environment we create

Understanding Trauma & the Body

When we experience overwhelming or stressful events, our bodies often hold onto that experience. Sometimes we disconnect from our bodies as a way to protect ourselves, which is a completely natural response. Traditional yoga classes can be wonderful, but they don't always feel safe or comfortable for everyone—especially those who've experienced trauma. Things like unexpected touch, certain poses, or even the way a class is taught can sometimes feel unsettling. Trauma-informed yoga is designed differently. It creates a welcoming space where you're always in control, with plenty of options and choices at every step. There's no pressure to do anything that doesn't feel right for you.

Core Principles of Trauma-Informed Practice

What this looks like in practice:

Slower pacing with time to notice sensations and make choices. Attention to the environment—lighting, personal space, and positioning. Multiple variations for every pose with encouragement to modify or opt out of anything that doesn't serve you.

Safety First

Creating a physically and emotionally safe environment where you feel secure to explore movement and breath at your own pace

Choice & Autonomy

You are always in control. Invitational language like "you might explore" rather than commands, with options and modifications so you decide what feels right

Present Moment Focus

Emphasis on noticing body sensations and awareness rather than achieving specific poses or perfect alignment

Predictability

Clear structure, advance notice of what's coming, and consistent practices help create a sense of safety and control

No Hands On Assists

Touch is never used without explicit consent. Verbal cues and demonstrations are offered instead of physical adjustments

Empowerment

Building internal awareness and helping you reconnect with your body's wisdom and signals in ways that feel supportive
